Database
The Puerto Rico Disaster Research Network (PR-DRN) team conducted a literature search of peer-reviewed articles between August and December 2024. The timeframe of the search, included pertinent articles discussing a variety of aspects about disasters in Puerto Rico published between 2014 and 2024, with majority of them published between 2017 and 2019. As a result, a detailed database was created.
METHODOLOGY
The keywords used for the search were:
- Earthquakes
- Flooding
- Hurricanes
- Landslides
- Natural Disasters
- Tsunami
For each article, the database includes:
- Basic Details, including title, authors’ names, institutions, and location, year of publication, and journal
- Study Contents, specifically the paper’s abstract and summary
- Language and Sources, including the paper’s original language, database from which it was retrieved and any relevant note

RESULTS
Much of the existing research focuses on short-term post-disaster assessment, often neglecting long-term recovery processes and the socio-economic impacts of recurring disasters and compound crises. There is a lack of comprehensive studies that integrate multiple types of natural hazards, such as hurricanes, flooding, and earthquakes, in the context of the island’s unique geographic and socio-political conditions. Interdisciplinary studies able to bridge environmental/disaster science with policy, community resilience and community-led responses and adaptation strategies are underexplored.
