Database
To build the database containing all scholarly articles found about disasters in Puerto Rico, the team catalogued the literature about disasters in Puerto Rico by including articles published between 2014 and 2024, with majority of articles were published between 2017 and 2019.
METHODOLOGY
The keywords used for the search were:
- Earthquakes
- Flooding
- Hurricanes
- Landslides
- Natural Disasters
- Tsunami
For each article, the database includes:
- Basic Details, including title, authors’ names, institutions, and location, year of publication, and journal
- Study Contents, specifically the paper’s abstract and summary
- Language and Sources, including the paper’s original language, database from which it was retrieved and any relevant note

RESULTS
Much of the existing research focuses on short-term post-disaster assessment, often neglecting long-term recovery processes and the socio-economic impacts of recurring disasters and compound crises. There is a lack of comprehensive studies that integrate multiple types of natural hazards, such as hurricanes, flooding, and earthquakes, in the context of the island’s unique geographic and socio-political conditions. Interdisciplinary studies able to bridge environmental/disaster science with policy, community resilience and community-led responses and adaptation strategies are underexplored.
