UCF GLOBAL IN COLLABORATION WITH SAM AERO
UCF Global, a unit of the University of Central Florida, provides specialized English language instruction to support the academic and professional needs of international learners. In collaboration with Sam Aero, UCF Global delivers a structured Aviation English program designed to strengthen pilot communication skills aligned with ICAO language proficiency descriptors.
This program is part of UCF Global’s mission to deliver high-quality, non-credit English language education for professional purposes.


STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
By the end of the Aviation English course, learners will be able to:
- Apply ICAO-standard radiotelephony phraseology in pilot-specific contexts
- Comprehend and respond to authentic ATC communications
- Communicate effectively during abnormal and emergency situations
- Interpret and communicate relevant information on aviation documents such as METARs, TAFs, NOTAMs, and flight plans
- Demonstrate language proficiency consistent with ICAO Level 4 descriptors
Program Overview
The Aviation English program for Sam Aero student pilots is a multi-phase, fully online English language training initiative delivered and academically managed by UCF Global.
The program focuses on foundational English development, progressive language readiness, and aviation-specific communication to support safe and effective participation in international aviation environments.
Program Structure
Phase 1: English Proficiency Assessment
- Online English placement assessment administered by UCF Global
- Required for all participating Sam Aero student pilots
- Used to determine placement within the Online English Program (OEP)
Phase 2: Online English Program (OEP)
- 8-week instructional session
- Two integrated English courses:
- Reading, Writing, and Grammar (RWG)
- Listening, Speaking, and Pronunciation (LSP)
- Delivered through Webcourses@UCF
- Includes asynchronous coursework, weekly live sessions, and final assessments
Phase 3: Tiered Instruction and Aviation English
Placement into Phase 3 is based on performance in the Online English Program:
- Students who demonstrate sufficient language readiness enroll in:
- One OEP course, and
- English for Aviation Communication: Pilot Focus (4-week online course)
- Students requiring additional language development continue in two OEP courses and receive aviation-context modules embedded at the designated ‘bridge’ OEP Level.
English for Aviation Communication: Pilot Focus
English for Aviation Communication: Pilot Focus is a 4-week online course designed for intermediate-high-intermediate English users preparing for pilot communication in international airspace.
Course components include:
- Weekly 1-hour live instructional sessions
- Scenario-based pilot–ATC communication practice
- Authentic aviation materials (ATC recordings, flight documentation, weather reports)
- Optional weekly one-on-one office hours
- Final assessment aligned with ICAO Level 4 language descriptors
COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Course Eligibility:
Pilot trainees.
18–20 flexible hours per week, completed asynchronously.
Online, synchronous and asynchronous Spring 2 2026
Course Dates: March 9 – April 2
- Application Fee: $50 (one-time, non-refundable).
- Tuition Fee:
- $920 per 8-week Online English Program session, which includes two courses (Reading/Writing/Grammar and Listening/Speaking/Pronunciation).
- $460 per 4-week Online Aviation English Course.

How do I navigate my course when language barriers are present?
The online courses are designed for easy navigation in English. However, there is a video explaining how to change the language of Webcourses to a preferred one: Knights Online – Profile and Notifications on Vimeo
What if I can not see any images in my Webcourses or I see a small blue icon box with a question mark?
This is due to the cross-site tracking setting on the Safari web browser. To fix this, choose Safari > Preferences, then click Privacy and Select “Prevent cross-site tracking.” Disabling this feature, may make your browsing information public. For more information view the guide on cross-site tracking. If this does not resolve the issue, we recommend accessing the course from another browser, such as Chrome or Firefox.
If you are using the Safari Web browser to access your classes in Webcourses@UCF it is advised that you use another browser (Firefox 79/80 or Chrome 84/85) as images in Pages, Modules, Assignments, and Quizzes may appear as empty boxes or question marks.
